Weight Gain of White-tailed Deer Fawns Relative to Fawning Date

Fifty-two white-tailed deer fawns (Odocoileus virginianus) were obtained from penned breeding stock (31) and wild captures (21) during the 1985 fawning period. Birth dates ranged from mid-April to late August. Fawns were reared in pens on evaporated milk. Water and calf starter were provided ad libitum. Fawns were weighed at 2 week intervals. Birth weights recorded for 23 fawns and estimated for 8 fawns of known birth date, differed (P ≤ 0.05) among early, middle, and late born fawns. Range, Movements and Habitat Use by Bobwhites in Southeastern Louisiana Pinelands

Radio-tagged northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) were monitored from November 1978 to April 1979 to determine their ranges, movements, and habitat use in pine (Pinus spp.) and mixed pine-hardwood habitats not managed for quail. Minimum ranges varied from 18.4 to 58.4 ha. Average daily straight-line distance movements were 272 m in winter and 185 m in spring. Habitat Use by Bobcats in Upland Forests of Louisiana

Habitat use by bobcats (Lynx rufus) was investigated in 1978-79 in forested uplands of Louisiana by monitoring 7 radio-collared adult bobcats (3 females, 4 males). Mean male home range (x = 1,010 ha) did not differ significantly from female ranges (x = 591 ha). Distances traveled during a diel period ranged from 0.5 Ian to 10.2 km and averaged 3.0 Ian. Chase Flights as an Index to Nest Density in Mottled Ducks

Waterfowl nest searches are labor intensive and expensive. Development of a method to estimate number of nests without conducting nest searches would be advantageous. Mottled duck (Anas fulvigula maculosa) chase flights were compared with number of nest initiations to determine if a quantifiable relationship exists. Frequency of chase flights over an area was independent of the number of nests found in the area (P > 0.10), precluding use of chase flight frequency to estimate nest density.
