Spatial and Temporal Movements of Striped Bass in the Upper Alabama River

A radio-telemetry study was conducted to determine spatial and temporal movements of adult striped bass (Morone saxatilis) in the Jones Bluff section of the Alabama River. Five fish were successfully implanted with radio transmitters during the summer of 1981 and the spring of 1982. These fish made extensive use of the Thurlow Dam tailwater on the Tallapoosa River. The fish arrived at Thurlow Dam in the spring when temperatures ranged from 16° to 17.5° C and left the tailwaters in late fall and early winter when water temperatures decreased to 19.5° and 18.5° C in 1981 and 1982...


Dimorphic Growth Patterns on Scales of Striped Bass and Morone Hybrids from a Central Alabama River

Striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and Morone hybrids were studied in the Tallapoosa River downstream of Thurlow Dam from March through November 1980. Age and growth analysis revealed that over 80% of the striped bass scales had numerous false annuli, while none were observed on Morone hybrid scales. The presence of false annuli indicated interruptions in normal growth during the mid- to late-summer period. Observation On Aquarium Spawning Of Estrogen-Treated And Untreated Tilapia

Genotypic male Tilapia aurea, previously treated for sex reversal to a female state, and their sex-reversed female (F') parent were stocked into aquaria with untreated females at various ratios. The reproduction of the 2 types of females with normal males was compared. None of the treated fish spawned; most were later found to have ovotestes. The PI sex-reversed female spawned repeatedly after she was paired with a male in a larger tank, indicating that the presence of normal females under confined aquarium conditions may have a repressive effect upon estrogen sex-reversed females.


Sampling Of Reservoir Fish Populations With Rotenone In Littoral Areas

A method of sampling fish populations in the littoral area of reservoirs was developed to estimate the number and standing stock of young-of-the-year (YOY) and adult fishes in West Point Reservoir, Alabama-Georgia. A surface area of 0.0 I ha was surrounded with a net (30.5 m x 2.7 m) and the fish were poisoned with rotenone. The sample sites were chosen randomly by using a grid system. Initial Fish Population Changes Following Impoundment Of West Point Reservoir, Alabama-Georgia

The species composition and relative abundance of fishes in West Point Reservoir, a main stem Chattahoochee River reservoir, changed after impoundment in 1975. Strong year classes of gizzard shad, threadfin shad, largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, brown bullhead, carp, bowfin, and many sunfishes were produced in 1975.
