The existence of a distinct walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) population in south-flowing drainages of the southeastern United States has been suspected for some time. Recently, a mitochondrial-DNA (mtDNA) marker was identified that permitted discrimination of these southern walleyes from northern forms.
