Striped Bass Hatching And Hybridization Experiments

Laboratory studies to determine the effect of striped bass egg sedimentation were conducted and a mean hatch of 35.7 percent was recorded for eggs placed on coarse sand while eggs placed on plastic had an average hatch of 36.4 percent. In comparison, the average hatch on silt-sand was 13.1 percent and 3.2 percent on silt-clay-sand substrate. None of the eggs deposited on a muck-detritus substrate hatched. Preliminary Experiments in the Artificial Propagation of Striped Bass, Roccus Saxatilis

Adult striped bass purchased from commercial fishermen on Albemarle Sound, N. C. were transported to the Fayetteville and Weldon Hatcheries, injected with hormones,and spawned. In addition to ripe fish brought into the Weldon Hatchery by fishermen, sexually mature striped bass were obtained from the Roanoke River by electro-fishing gear. The Use of Electrical Stimuli in Live·picking Organisms from Bottom Samples

A simple, portable, and effective apparatus for electrically stimulating macrobenthos is described as a material aid for rapid picking of bottom samples in the field. Experience has demonstrated that the use of electrical stimulation not only shortens the time required, but it also results in recovering many organisms that otherwise would be overlooked.
